Pendyrus Male Choir<\/span><\/h1>\n

In <\/span>2021, Pendyrus <\/span>Male Voice Choir moved in as a tenant with us at Tylorstown Welfare Hall, they feel very much \u2018at home\u2019 here and we absolutely love having them here.<\/span><\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/span>They have their own room in the Institute and rehearse in the Main Hall every Monday and Wednesday evening.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Long before Alfred Tylor (after whom Tylorstown was named) sank his coal shaft in 1872, the valley was uninhabited except for a scattering of hill-farms. Two of these, of which only a few stones now remain, were called <\/span>Pendyrus<\/span> <\/span>Uchaf<\/span> and <\/span>Pendyrus<\/span> <\/span>Isaf<\/span> (\u201c<\/span>uchaf<\/span>\u201d = highest; \u201c<\/span>isaf<\/span>\u201d = lowest), and he named the colliery <\/span>Pendyrus<\/span> (later changed to Ferndale Number 6). The name appears to be an amalgamation of two Welsh words \u2013 \u201cpen\u201d which perhaps in this context means a peak or a ridge, and \u201c<\/span>dyrus<\/span>\u201d,\u202fwhich implies\u202frough, rocky terrain\u202fwhich cannot easily be cultivated.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

On the evening of the first meeting of the choir the men were distracted by a fire which gutted the colliery Power Station across the valley. As they watched the blaze, they noticed a railway signal-box illuminated by the flames. The signal-box, too, was named \u201cPendyris\u201d (an alternative spelling), and, deciding that this was more historical, more romantic, and more \u201cWelsh\u201d than Tylorstown, they adopted it for the new choir. \u201dPendyrus\u201d is now accepted by the Post Office as the official Welsh alternative for Tylorstown, and can be found as the names of two streets in the locality, and of one in Cardiff, of houses occupied by choristers past and present, and, believe it or not, of a street in Delta, Pennsylvania (re-christened in honour of the choir\u2019s American tour in 1989).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n
